Joined my mom in the Varalakshmi vratam prayer first thing in the morning, the same prayer I participated in with my in-laws the prior week. The prayer brought back the peace of mind that seemed so distant with the events from the prior day. It was also a huge relief to see my sister fighting her way to success with the customs department and regaining possession of her travel documents. She had to deal with their bureaucracy for weeks, making daily rounds to various offices and putting up with some very unpleasant people.
Though the latter half of the day was filled with hospital visits, x-rays and anesthesia for my dad, it was, in a weird way, a nice feeling for my sister and I to just be there through it all, with our parents, when they needed support the most.
I was also grateful to spend the evening with my other family, celebrating my mother-in-law's surprise birthday. She inspires me with her innocence, simplicity and endless love for her family and I felt extremely fortunate to witness the entire family reciprocate her love on her special day.
Nothing beats the strength of a loving family, distance has absolutely no bearing on it.
